An expert thinks that targeted audits and feedback are more effective than targeted nudges at reducing unnecessary pathology testing, even though they may not address underlying issues. In Australia, a study revealed that while nudge letters reduced overall pathology request rates by 36%, they were largely sustained over six months and led to fewer requests in the long term. However, critics argue that these interventions may inadvertently increase false positives and patient anxiety, especially when combined with other features like CPD-accredited education. From my perspective, this research underscores the importance of prioritizing clinically relevant use of pathology tests, as well as advocating for transparent communication with clinicians about the benefits and risks of such tests. While the government has emphasized preventing incorrect claims, it remains unclear if these practices will significantly reduce wasteful testing in the future.
